JUST HANG UP. That is the simplest rule of thumb to avoid scams according to experts.

Scam calls are becoming harder to recognise. The caller may know your name, the bank you use or some of your personal details. Even the number on your screen can appear genuine.

If someone calls about a financial matter and everything suddenly feels urgent, that is your cue to hang up. Scammers use pressure to make you act before you think. Take your time and check things for yourself.

This short anti-fraud video makes the advice easy to remember: when an unexpected caller asks for confidential information or creates urgency around your account, just hang up.

End the conversation first. Then contact the organisation independently through its official app, website or published number.

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Benjamin Franklin

Always hang up if you hear

  • “I’ll help you move your money to a safe account.”

  • “Install this app so that I can help you.‘

  • “Approve the banking prompt to cancel the transaction.”

  • “I’m sending you a one time pin (OTP) - let me know what the number is.”

Final thought

The rule I’m taking away is simple: If you are rushed over a financial matter, stop, hang up and check independently. Anything genuine can still be dealt with through the organisation’s official channels.

I hope this helps you feel a little more confident the next time an unexpected call comes through.

Regards,
Johann
